Curator of SPIEL! Games as Critical Practice

Michel Roth lives in Lucerne/Switzerland. He is professor of composition and music theory at the Basel University of Music and a member of the research department there. Many radio and CD productions document his work, for which he has received numerous prizes and grants. His first opera Im Bau (2012) was performed at Theater Basel and toured internationally. Later, it was further developed as a radiophonic research project into a multimedia web documentation (https://imbauprojekt.ch). His second opera, the „depressive operetta“ Die Künstliche Mutter was premiered in 2016 at Lucerne Festival.

In research, he is engaged in applications of game theory in music and discourse analysis, collaborative art (e.g. Dieter Roth; www.dieterrothmusic.ch), acoustic ecology (sound studies on ropeways in the Swiss Alps; www.ropesinging.ch) and organology (systematisation and knowledge transfer of contemporary playing techniques). In 2022, after 10 years of research (with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation), he completed his dissertation on the topic of „Aufs Spiel gesetzt. Eine spieltheoretische Untersuchung indeterminierter Musik“ at the University of Basel (Musicology). In 2023, he curated the Festival "SPIEL! Games as Critical Practice" at Theater Basel.
